Esther is an immigrant girl who becomes the best friend of Audrey. Born in the old country, Esther and here parents settle in Chamberfield after spending most of Esther’s kithood in New York City. While initially shy on account of her unusual appearance, Esther proves to be a spunky and thoughtful cat in whom Audrey can confide in. She has a strong sense of justice, a skeptical nature, and a boldness that is sometimes to the annoyance of Audrey’s sister, Louise.

Trivia
- Esther is deaf in her right ear corresponding to her blue eye, as white cats with blue eyes are frequently deaf.
- Moreover, her dialogue quirk of Every Word Beginning Capitalized is meant to reflect that she speaks louder on account of her deafness.
- In the original draft her name was Lucy, but this was altered as her personality changed, which was originally almost identical to Louise’s.
- For example, she initially loved kittens instead of disliking them. As she became a feistier, questioning young political individual, the sweet-sounding Lucy had to go.
- Esther and her family are based on Turkish Angoras.
- They were originally conceptualized as French due to the breed’s popularity in France; however, French immigrants make little sense for the time period especially compared to the much better option of Eastern European immigrants.
