Abigail is the secondary protagonist of The Lion’s Daughter and the eldest daughter of the Brown family. Having previously been absent, Abigail returned to Chamberfield when Audrey and Louise were about seven years old. As a result of her former absence and aloof disposition, Audrey desperately wants the attention of her older sister; however, Abigail’s depression has made such a connection unsuccessful. Hardly ever venturing outside the house, Abigail largely keeps to herself and her knitting.
She is the childhood best friend of her sisters’ schoolteacher, Maribelle, though Abigail greatly disapproves of her marriage to Nolan, primarily because the tom is an unrighteous rake, but also because Abigail is still in love with her.
